California moving into the future

Sara Taft • October 5, 2023

A bill is being sent to the Governor of California that allows dental hygiene students eligible for licensure upon graduation.

The bill changes the process for licensure since it would allow graduating students from an accredited dental hygiene college to satisfy the requirement for satisfactory performance of the dental hygiene exam usually provided by WREB or any other clinical dental hygiene exam.

This bill will pertain to any hygienist who has graduated from an accredited program in California and approved by the Dental Hygiene Board of California within the last 3 years.

Some educational provisions were added, including a CPR BLS requirement, and increasing their CE hours from 7.5 to 10 hours.

Will more states follow this trend, and do dental hygiene students need to be examined by a third party after they have passed the rigorous accredited dental hygiene curriculum?
